I am proud to be a cancer survivor because it represents a journey of immense strength, resilience, and growth. My diagnosis with multicentric breast cancer (breast cancer in which there is more than one tumor) in February 2024 tested me in every way possible, but it also revealed my inner strength and determination. As a PhD student in public health, specializing in cancer prevention among marginalized populations, I have faced challenges head-on, proving that both mental and physical strength are crucial in overcoming adversity.

The journey began with the shock of diagnosis. The word cancer changes everything. Suddenly, I found myself navigating a world of medical appointments, treatments, and uncertainties. However, through this, I discovered a greater level of inner strength I never knew I had. Every day became a testament to resilience, and every obstacle was a chance to grow stronger.

As a lifelong athlete, I have always believed in the power of physical strength. But cancer taught me that mental strength is just as important. The days following chemotherapy were tough, filled with fatigue and discomfort. Yet, I refused to let these challenges define me. Instead, I leaned into my training, adapting my routines to accommodate my treatment. Lifting weights became more than a sport; it became a symbol of my fight against cancer. Each lift was a reminder of my determination and an assertion of my strength.

Beyond the physical challenges, cancer also reinforced my commitment to my academic and advocacy work. As a PhD student in public health, my research focuses on cancer prevention among marginalized and minority populations. My diagnosis gave me a unique perspective on the very issues I study. It emphasized the importance of access to care, early detection, and the need for comprehensive support systems for those battling this disease. I became passionate about advocating for young adults with cancer and marginalized communities. My work and career goals now carry a personal urgency, driving me to push for change and support others in their battles.

Surviving cancer has made me stronger, not just in the gym, but in every aspect of my life. It has taught me the importance of holistic strength – balancing physical resilience with mental and emotional fortitude. This holistic approach has been crucial in my journey, allowing me to face each day with determination and hope. It has reinforced my belief that true strength comes from within and is manifested in our ability to overcome adversity.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my journey has been sharing it with others. I document my experiences, offering a glimpse into the life of a cancer survivor who is also a competitive powerlifter. My goal is to inspire and provide hope to others facing similar challenges. I want to show that life after cancer is not just possible but powerful. Every post, every story, is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.

My journey is not just about surviving; it’s about thriving. It’s about finding joy and purpose even in the face of adversity. It’s about using my experiences to advocate for others, to raise awareness, and to support those who are still fighting. It’s about proving that cancer does not define us, but our response to it does.

As I reflect on my journey, I am filled with gratitude for the support of my family, friends, and the medical professionals who have been by my side. Their encouragement and care have been instrumental in my recovery. I am also grateful for the opportunity to give back, to use my platform to make a difference, and to show others that there is life after cancer.

Embracing my journey and sharing it with others is my way of inspiring hope and demonstrating the power of resilience. I am proud to be a cancer survivor because it means I have faced one of life’s greatest challenges and emerged stronger. It means I have a story of hope and strength to share, a story that can inspire and support others. And it means I am living proof that life after cancer is not just possible, but it is vibrant, fulfilling, and powerful.
