Disability Film Festival

http://www.disabilityfilmfestival.net/links.html

Disability film festivals are an integral part of the disability art and cultural movement. They offer a forum for the examination of ideas,
myths, fears and attitudes about people with disabilities. Stories of disability pride, social issues, societal values and individual
challenges are just some of the many ideas that have been addressed in films. Film festivals have met with great success in Australia, the UK, the United States and in Canada at the most successful "Picture this Film
Festival," Calgary, Alberta.

Murderball - a documentary about paraplegics who play full-contact rugby in custom-made wheelchairs - overcoming unbelievable obstacles to compete in the Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece. View Trailer  Rated R

Winner of Best Documentary by Sundance Film Festival

Murderball Picture

An open letter from the distributors of MURDERBALL

On July 8th we opened MURDERBALL in theatres in both NY and Los Angeles.
The film, which was launched at the Sundance Film Festival in January (where it won the Audience Award for Best Documentary,) got better Reviews than any other film released this year thus far. It got enormous Amounts of attention from all the mainstream media-media that is normally reluctant to devote time and space to low-budget independent films, no matter how acclaimed. But, MURDERBALL overcame all those perception issues and landed multi-page features in important magazines and valuable interview slots on several important national television talk shows. Everyone who sees the film loves it, and one of the most talked-about aspects of the film is that it portrays people with disabilities as people. Gone was the pity, as well as the self-pity. MURDERBALL is that rare commodity-an entertainment that depicts people with disabilities WITH DISABILITIES living full and successful lives.

MURDERBALL had everything going for it (including a heavy advertising
budget.) What it DIDN'T have was an audience. The fact is, the film opened slowly and, in its second week, it has failed to build. At the moment, its prospects for theatrical longevity are threatened. Our research shows that people are staying away because they have a prejudice; they just don't want to see certain things at the movies. It appears they don't want to see disabled people on screen. Those of you who live with this prejudice on a daily basis, those of you who work with disabled people may recognize this phenomenon, but please don't stand for it. Go watch the movie. Take someone. Challenge others to go.

If those of you closest to the issues don't give the film a boost from Now until early August, the 15th Anniversary week of the Americans with Disabilities Act, what chance does it have with a squeamish non-disabled audience?

MURDERBALL opens in (list cities or number of markets) on Friday, July 22nd. Its theatrical destiny beyond this coming weekend will be painfully short if the boxoffice isn't there.

MURDERBALL needs to be seen; it certainly needs to be seen by YOU.

You have nothing to lose and a lot to gain by seeing MURDERBALL in a theater this JULY.

For more information about MURDERBALL go to MURDERBALLMOVIE.COM.

Thank you very much,

The Ringer

Presented by

Farrelly Brothers and Special Olympics

From the makers of Shallow Hal, Something about Mary and Dumb and Dumber

Starts December 23 The Ringerstarring Johnny Knoxville will open in theaters located in the United States and Canada. This show is an off-beat comedy yet inspiring story about an ordinary man who discovers what it truly means to be “special” when he attempts to “fix” the Special Olymipcs.

More Information and Trailers

The National Down Syndrome Society is proud to join the Special Olympics in support of "The Ringer," an upcoming Farrelly brothers film that uses humor to challenge destructive stereotypes of people with intellectual disabilities. The film opens at theaters nationwide on December 23, 2005, and we invite all our constituents across the country to support the film on opening weekend and beyond.

"The Ringer" tells the story of Steve Barker, a young man who pretends to have an intellectual disability so he can compete in and "fix" a Special Olympics event. However, Barker's attitude changes as he develops friendships with several of the Special Olympics athletes. He learns, as will moviegoers, that people with intellectual disabilities are more like the rest of us than they are different. The athletes in the film listen to music, play video games, watch the latest movies, and work together toward athletic excellence - all while having fun.

Instead of tugging at the heartstrings, "The Ringer" uses the typical outrageous Farrelly Brothers humor ("There's Something about Mary," "Stuck on You," "Shallow Hal") to promote the message that just like everyone else, individuals with intellectual disabilities are people first, each with their own interests, talents, abilities, and personalities. The movie also features more than 150 people with intellectual disabilities in small parts and supporting roles.

We are very excited about the opportunity that "The Ringer" offers to raise the profile of people with intellectual
disabilities in their communities. We encourage all affiliates, Buddy Walk organizers, and constituents to attend screenings at
your local theaters and to join us in publicizing the film.

Some ways your group can promote the movie include:

* Designate Dec. 23 as "See The Ringer Day" in your community and encouraging your families to attend.

* Talk to a local movie theater about getting a discount on a block of tickets and distributing them to your members.

* Organize a group outing for your teens and adults group on opening weekend.

* Reach out to other disability organizations in your community about the film.

Below is a link to an invitation to support "The Ringer" on opening weekend to use in your efforts. The invitation includes a message from Eddie Barbanell, an actor with Down syndrome who stars in the film. Please feel free to print out copies and distribute the flyer to all individuals in your community who are interested in supporting individuals with Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities.
